Comparing two sets (!!) of files for duplicates ??

mattad 03-01-2006, 18:49

Occasionally I want to compare two sets (= directory trees) of files

and want to find files which are in both group of files.

This means I don't want to view files which are dupes but only exist

in one set internally. I did not see such a feature in NoClone.

I would appreciate if the next release would have such a search option.

Keep in mind that I should have the possibility to search the following

scenario as well:

"Find all dupes which are in directory tree beginning D:\myproj\*.*

and where the sibling(s) is/are in directory tree D:\*.* EXCEPT D:\myproj\*.*

I totally agree mattad.  I've searched for this feature across many products and everyone omits it.

Most of the time when you are trying to free up disk space you want to delete this file HERE if another copy exists OVER THERE.

You may not be interested in internal duplicates, which may exist for important reasons.

Of course you can accomplish this for most scenarios by using a Target / Master search areas and then using SmartMarker to mark and delete only those files in the target path., but this wastes time searching for internal duplicates.

Agree to this!!

I often have two sets (directories) where each set internally have several duplicates and most files exist in both sets. I am trying to find the few unique files in each set (files that exist in one set but not in the other). Thus, I want to spend as little time as possible searching for internal duplicates.

Agreed. In searching the entire drive, "readme.txt" is a good example. Assuming a sort-by-group list, how about e a right-click option for a pop-up list showing this "duplicate" folder and all other duplicates in the same folder? Right now I use "open folder", but it would be nice to be able to mark-for-deletion in a pop-up. ..... Brings me back to the request for maintaining the user's column width for folder path and name. ... Another wish: RENAME right click option for the file name directly on the results line.
