Trying to Compare Pics on Cd to Master on Hard Drive
Reply Quote
I would like to have a master collection on the hard drive and search CD's to make sure that all pictures are on the master HD. Ideally I would be able to mark all pics on the cd that are not on the hard drive and copy them to the hard drive.
Trying to straighten up years of using different systems to backup and organize pics.

Thanks
Sam

Have a look at this post using search target (CD) and search area (HD) to speed up search to get mater collection. Use Smart marker to mark all files located in CD and move to HD.

FYI, Consolidate backups by Search Target and Search Area at http://noclone.net/support/forums/15/ShowPost.aspx

I only want to mark the ones on the CD that are not on the hard drive. How do I get Smart Marker to do this?

It's simple. Click menu Result files, Smart Marker. In "more" tab, "By Folder", click folder, say d:\ which is your CD-ROM drive. Make sure you check "Sub-folder". Finally click Mark to complete.

Then, I am not sure about your situation.

Suppose we have 3 groups of duplicates:
H1,H2,C1
H3, H4, H5
C2,C3
where C1-3 are on CD and H1-H5 are on HD.

What files do you want to mark? Marking C1,C2,C3 is simple but it seems that is not required. Then what do you mean?

Do you realize that locating duplicates of any graphics --I'm using the term "graphics" loosely to mean any image file whether it's line art, or photo, whether it's B&W or color-- is not an exact science?

Unless the two images are exactly the same, it's very easy to have many duplicates that NoClone will bypass, because it relies on byte-by-byte comparison. The images must be of the same format, must have the same color information, and size.

For example if you've made a copy of an image, changed its format from BMP to GIF or JPG --hell, for that matter if you've crated two jpg copies using different jpg compression options-- or if you've cropped or rotated the copy image, or if you've applied some color reduction or filters, then the two images are no longer the "same" in terms of byte-by-byte comparison, even though the "graphic-content" is the same (and consequently they are duplicates, in a manner of speaking!)

There are other programs that compare the luminescence or color information, and some programs divide the image into quarters and average various types of image information and compare them to figure out if the two images are the same or "similar in content" (even if byte-by-byte the files aren't the same), and I believe what you need for comparing images is that kind of program.

On a similar vein there's talk of mp3s in the next version, and I'm very curious how the developers of NoClone will deal with the various issues, such as different bit-rates, thus different file lengths --i.e. byte-by-byte they may not be the same, but the content, which in this case is one particular song, is the same!
