Once you mark an entry, you have to click out of that selection for the counter to register. In your screenshot, you have the the three marked items and still have it highlighted on one of them. click on another entry and it will get updated.
A nuisance still...

oops.. it is exactly the situation. the check value cannot update visually when the file is selected. we will find the way to fix that issue.
