NoClone

Verdict: Got crap? Use this.

If you're anything like me then you've got a multi-Gigabyte music library full of duplicate songs that you've been dumping in various folders over the course of several years – gathered as you've transferred folders from one PC to another. You'll also have several copies of the same digital photos strewn across various folders from where you've transferred the contents of an old hard disk on to another. You could have several versions of the same document and a whole host of other files cluttering up your hard disk. If you're a network admin then your network could be full of non-files (0KB in size) and duplicated rubbish.

If any of the above sound even vaguely familiar, then you need NoClone. It searches your hard disks for you and finds the duplicated and bad files. You can then mark the offenders and delete them all at once. If you've got hundreds of files, a 'smart mark' feature allows you to automatically mark the older files or those in particular places before deleting them – it's highly customiseable.

In virtually no time at all your hard disk will be virtually trimmed in size by a factor of loads. If you've always meant to get round to organising your files but never have time, quite simply NoClone is for you.

You can get it online direct from the NoClone people. It's $38 or $71 for the Enterprise version.

Great tool, the company i work for might probably need this. Beats slowly searching up duplicates on 500+ gigs

About the Atomic article NoClone

Nick Ross used to have 20 copies of achybreakyheart.mp3 on his hard drive.

What do you think?

lolz @ price.

Have often to run this - maybe once a year

Is $38 (Australian??) really worth it?

if you've got several hundred gig of mp3's.... Yes :)

would be better if it wasn't just mp3's

What happens if you have several albums with the same song. Say, the album the song's on and then a best-of album. You've got 2 copied technically but you wouldn't want 1 removed.

Does it only look for MP3s that are the exact same? Or does it take into account ID3 tags and all that jazz? This program does seem kind of handy.

For $38? dont think it is worth it when good managment is better.

If it looks for exact clones of files, then MP3's wil have the same ID3 tags. Give me an hour in visual basic and i will have a program, free, that can check for duplicate tags for you.

This would not work for files without such tags but how often would you really need to scan for duplicate files?

How would you check that you do not have copies that are in the slighest bit different?

For a non freeware program, I am unimpressed by what is claims to do. And because it is not freeware I am not going to buy it just to see if it can.

There are freeware options around, you just have to look.

EasyCleaner - helps clean up your machine by removing invalid registry entries, unnecessary files, duplicate files, invalid shortcuts, Internet Explorer history and cookies etc. It also allows you to manage the startup program list and add/remove software list.

And one I use myself:
Dup Detector - Dup Detector finds duplicate or near duplicate images by comparing image pixel data. Large image collections are often infested with duplicate images under different names. They can be cleaned more quickly with the use of Dup Detector.

Hope someone finds that useful.

If you like the idea of this program, try DupliFinder.

its written by a mate of mine, and he would love any comments/suggestions you have towards it.

works on md5 hashing files to tell if they are duplicates or not. takes a while to work, but its a great program.

get it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/duplifinder/

I was very keen to download the program until I read the words "Free Trial".

Since there are freeware options already available, I'm not even going to bother with this.

Great idea. Which is why it has been done before. If I use something like this, it will be the freeware type for me.

I guess it could be good for some companies though

OMG I don't see this being worth it at all. I mean in a pinch a little python could find you all the files with the same name. And then a little knowledge of hashing and some time could get rid of all the files that are the same even if the name is slightly different.

I am not impressed with this program, I am even less impressed with Atomic for bringing this program to my attention.

What I would like to have is a way to have one file saved but a way to link it to multiple albums like Slace has said.

Sure I could create a playlist for each album, then have the common songs saved once, but thats like a bloody lot of effort... maybe one day... when I have a spare year or so to dig through all the MP3's
